Structure from motion for moving objects

Only certain kinds of object motion generate visual information for the 3D shape of the object. The video below was generated by randomly placing dots on an otherwise transparent object. When the object is stationary, texture gradients provide a weak shape cue, but the random-dot surface looks mostly flat. Translating the object up-and-down or right-and-left leaves the apparent shape unchanged, as does rotation around an axis parallel to the viewing direction. Only when the object is rotated around an axis perpendicular to the viewing direction does its shape become clear.
